Traditional secretarial typing jobs have evolved to PC-based word processing and data entry and today most typing jobs will involve some other elements of office administration. There are also specialist typing roles. For instance transcription is a kind of data entry that turns recorded speech into written transcript. Transcriptionists are normally provided with specialist software packages to complete this work or Microsoft Word can be used. Specialist fields of transcription include legal transcription, medical transcription and corporate transcription. Audio typing is used extensively in certain workplaces so there are audio typing jobs in architect firms, GPs offices, TV production companies and legal departments among others. Audio typing is very similar to stenography because it is the conversion of information in recorded voice form to a typed format. Dictations or transcripts of interviews need to be put into a document form for many reasons, and those who carry out the work need to be fast and highly skilled. The audio typist will use a transcription machine or will play back the audio recording through specialist software and use a foot pedal to control the speed of the audio. Typing jobs are sometimes described as 'administrator', 'office junior', 'audio typist' or 'clerk'. Often temporary work suits typists who will be paid around £7.50 to £8 per hour for their services through a temping agency. Full time, permanent contracts for typing jobs will pay around £14,000 to £16,000 per annum.
