Sales teams require a great deal of administrative support and this is where the role of sales administrator comes in. They provide the vital link between the sales executive and the client so the job will typically entail processing sales documents, managing paperwork, processing invoices and chasing overdue payments. Sales administrators will spend a great deal of their time on the phone assisting orders, and dealing with requests and complaints. If you're looking into a career in sales, a sales administrator job can be a foot in the door as you will quickly learn how the sales department operates, and what makes a successful sales executive. Ideal candidates have all-round admin skills, good communication skills, are adaptable and highly efficient. Dealing with sales often requires a working knowledge of spreadsheets and other office systems. It helps to have experience of secretarial, sales and administrative work. Successful candidates going for administrator roles will be confident on the phone, have previous office experience and be capable of keeping on top of high volumes of email correspondence. It helps to be computer literate and understand databases and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Hiring companies often say they are looking for people who can work in a busy environment, show real initiative and rise to challenges. Everyone on the sales team will be striving to hit daily or weekly sales targets, and be fully engaged in long-term goals such as growing the business or building up the client base. Sales administrators might be responsible for generating sales leads, preparing sales documents and chasing sales quotes. It's essential to be driven and ambitious and numeracy skills will be very useful. In addition, qualifications in business management, marketing or sales will be valued by recruiters. Sales administrators can expect to earn around £15,000 but higher salaries can be found in central London and across the south east – for instance in the region of £20,000.
