The average salary of a Personal Assistant (PA) job in the UK is £25,000 according to salarytrack.co.uk, but 10% of job offers for this role are made with a £40,000 salary. PAs are responsible for supporting one or several key personnel – typically managers or executives, and so it's absolutely vital that they understand what the organisation is trying to achieve and what their executive’s duties are. The personal assistant may also be described as an executive secretary, or a personal secretary. The managers in question often rely very heavily on their PA, so this is a close working relationship and a high degree of trust is required. To some degree the PA is lightening the workload for their manager, carrying out admin duties that support their work, but also deputising, making calls on their behalf, recruiting others needed for the department, and making low-level decisions. The bulk of the PA's day to day tasks are administrative, but he or she must also be sociable, a good communicator and able to liaise with clients, suppliers and fellow executives. A lot of time is spent taking phone calls and screening calls, making diary appointments and planning meetings and transport as it's required. The work can be repetitive but in some cases PAs will take on research projects or larger tasks. PAs are required in all sectors from the media, to retail management, higher education and politics. Big employers of PAs are the IT, recruitment and property sectors. Often these well-paid admin roles are viewed as a step-in to a different career goal, and many PAs will be using their experience to learn about a particular sector from the inside. There are many PA jobs for people with language skills but it is worth checking exactly how your language skills will be put to use on a daily basis. A major benefit of the PA role is the variety on offer, and there are often opportunities to travel as part of the job.
