Career prospects for working as a Legal Secretary are very good. The role can command good salaries once Legal Secretaries have gained some experience, but there are also many opportunities for those new to the world of supporting solicitors and barristers. One way to start a career as a Legal Secretary is to gain a Legal Secretaries Diploma, but there are no hard and fast rules about entry. Excellent secretarial skills are a must, and it will help to have an interest and some basic knowledge of law and relevant legal procedures. Leading law firms do sometimes offer in-house Legal Secretary training programmes or pay for secretaries to gain a recognised qualification, or complete an Apprenticeship from recognised training organisation. The job itself can be interesting and varied. A Legal Secretary's main responsibility is to produce and manage legal documents which might include court papers, wills, commercial contracts and legal reports. Often notes will be typed up from audio tapes, and a lot of time is spent booking appointments, organising written correspondence and billing, answering phone enquiries and dealing with clients. Legal Secretaries might also accompany solicitors at court, and when visiting police cells. An interesting part of the job is legal research. Different areas of the law will require different skills, so decide whether you want to be a Legal Secretary in a criminal law firm or dealing with family law, property law, media law or employment law, for example. Salaries for junior Legal Secretary roles tend to range between £12,000 and £20,000 per annum, while for more experienced Legal Secretaries the salary will be closer to £30,000, and can rise to £36,000 for the most highly-qualified. Good literacy skills are a basic requirement for Legal Secretaries, as well as computer skills, the ability to meet deadlines, and good attention to detail. A polite manner and the ability to communicate clearly will also be invaluable.
