Reports to: Director - Human Resources

Role overview

The role is responsible for the accurate and timely payment of our employees and the effective administration/coordination of employee benefits; it is therefore a key and vital role within the company.  The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive knowledge of payroll transactions, will have managed a benefits portfolio and be HMRC compliant; including pension auto enrolment and RTI.

To be successful in this role you will not only possess strong technical skills but also have excellent communication and analytical skills.

This is a great opportunity for someone who is self-managed, motivated and requires minimal supervision and who works efficiently both alone and as part of a team.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities

Customer

  • This is a Group role which provides support to all Trading Divisions and Group Functions.   Consequently the customers of this role are the managers and employees of the company. The service offered should be that of the highest standard.

  • Produce reports and analysis of payroll data/trends as required by senior management/HR Director.

  • In conjunction with the HR Director ensure employee communications regarding pay and benefits are clear, timely and engaging.

  • By exception, arrange payments outside of payroll, calculating tax and NI.

Company

  • In-house payroll management for 500+ employees.

  • Ensure effective calculation and payment for all aspects of pay in the employee life-cycle, including new joiners, absence, maternity/paternity, special payments and leavers ensuring associated notifications to HMRC/employee.

  • Implement annual salary and bonus review outcomes

  • Keep Cascade Payroll System updated with payroll sensitive information and submit payroll on this system.

  • Export file from Cascade for input into the accounts system.

  • Ensure end of tax year procedures are carried out on Cascade and returns are filed with HMRC.

  • Ensure accurate record keeping, processing and communication with the company benefits providers to ensure renewals/changes are processed appropriately i.e. PHI, PMI.

  • Process salary sacrifice benefits such as CCV/Cycle to work.

  • Ensure effective processing and communication with the company group pension scheme provider.

  • Ensure effective administration and coordination with Fleet Provider in the authorisation of company cars.

  • Critically review existing payroll, benefits and tax procedures, making practical and value-added recommendations for improvement.

Colleagues

  • Ensure close and effective working with the HR administration on all aspects of payroll and benefits administration.

  • Ensure accurate costing information reports from payroll are provided to the HR Director and Group Finance Director.

  • To provide high quality advice on payroll-related matters, responding to queries and liaising with departmental managers, employees, HR, Finance and Inland Revenue as necessary.

  • Work well within a team and demonstrate support and flexibility with colleagues in the achievement of function/team goals.

  • Maintain and develop personal knowledge and skills through continuing personal development.

Key Competencies:

  • Proven payroll management experience with detailed knowledge and understanding of UK payroll related legislation and statutory requirements, including PAYE and other deductions within HMRC rules.

  • Advanced excel skills, experience in using pivot tables, index match and V look-up to compare data.

  • Experience in Cascade payroll system and reconciling interface reports is desirable.

  • Highly numeric with good analytical skills.

  • Good eye for detail.

  • Good communication skills with the ability to convey complex numerical information effectively.

  • Problems solving skills with the ability to investigate and diagnose issues and make improvements.

  • Adheres to SP values of always do the right thing for clients, colleagues and the company.
