A graduate job is traditionally the umbrella name given to a job or career path where a degree is the required entry level qualification. However, today it is most probably more accurate to define a graduate job as a ‘job that a graduate does’. Most graduate jobs will fall under one of four categories. There are traditional graduate jobs, modern graduate jobs, niche graduate jobs and new graduate jobs. Traditional graduate jobs are usually found within established professions for which the general route has always been via a degree. Traditional graduate jobs would include any careers in medicine or law amongst many others. You could also look into modern graduate jobs which are professions where an undergraduate degree became the usual route of entry around the last significant period of expansion of the higher education system, which was in the 1960s. Modern graduate jobs include primary school teaching, management and IT jobs. Niche graduate jobs tend to be found in a workplace where the majority of employees do not have degrees, but where there are specialist areas where certain employees do require them. Nursing, retail management and some positions in the leisure industry are all examples of niche graduate jobs. The fourth type, is new graduate jobs, which are areas which are only now being covered by undergraduate degrees. New graduate jobs can be anything from welfare work to physiotherapy. If you are looking for a graduate job then you should always start at your university or college careers service. They can guide you on vacancies and even graduate schemes. There are also graduate careers fairs, which are great places to go to find information and see what opportunities are out there. These fairs tend to take place around the UK, from June until around the middle of the autumn. Graduate vacancies can become available throughout the year, however, a lot of companies tend to advertise them during the autumn, with closing dates around Christmas and the New Year. You should, when applying for graduate jobs, make sure your application stands out of the crowd and you should also be prepared to tailor your applications to the position and organisation you are applying to.
