An executive assistant is the right hand of the executive or corporate professional that he or she is supporting. It is a vital role within the organisation and you get to work closely with an executive offering your support and providing them with administrative help. You will also have to be attentive and be able to anticipate what is required of you in your position. It is important, when you are heading for a role as an executive assistant, to make it clear that you see the job as a career choice as executives don’t like hiring assistants who they feel are going to move on to higher positions. If you are looking to work as an executive assistant you will need to have some key skills that are suited for the role. You should be used to working as part of a team and be prepared to offer your support to the executive with whom you are working. You should also have excellent organisational and administrative skills as executives often won’t have time to deal with things like these themselves. You should also be calm and be able to think on your feet. The ability to work well with others is vital and you should be especially good at dealing with difficult personalities. This is because you will be working with executives who are themselves working in very pressurised situations and things can get heated. Your tasks will, in most cases, be delegated by the executive who serves as your superior. Tasks will often revolve around clerical tasks, such as reading and screening incoming correspondence, drafting and proofing letters, and handling other basic administrative jobs. As the assistant you may also be charged with managing the executive’s schedule, keeping track of their meeting times, various appointments outside the office and you may also have to make travel arrangements when necessary.
