Customer service jobs are mainly involved with the interface between the company and the consumer. If you are working in customer services then you will be the company’s first point of contact and will be heavily involved with customers, advising them on specific products or services. Customer service jobs vary greatly and you could find yourself working behind a counter or till, on the phone, at a computer, or behind a customer service desk. Where you are based may also vary. You could be working in a shop, in a call centre, in a government office, at an insurance company or in a bank. The actual job can cover a wide range of customer-orientated tasks and roles. You can be dealing with customer complaints about a certain service or product that they have received, you could be required to make sales if you are in a shop or call centre, or you could simply be there to provide customers with certain information, which is a very rewarding side of customer service. Seeing as your job is mainly revolving around customers it can change on a daily basis. Having good people skills is an essential part of the job and you should also be good at thinking on your feet, in order to deal with the wide variety of tasks that may come your way. No two customers are the same, so you should be comfortable dealing with different issues and different types of people. You should also be good at working with others, as customer service roles are usually set within a team. This means it is a great way to make friends and socialise. Salaries do tend to start pretty low, but if you are willing to work hard you could end up making a career out of customer services. The job can, if you are working on a shop floor, be very physically demanding, as you have to be on your feet for large periods of the day. As well as good people skills you should also have administrative skills and the ability to remain patient at all times. You should also have enthusiasm, stamina and be able to work well under pressure.
